Schlage Sense vs. August Smart Lock Gen 2 — Things in Common

Both the Schlage Sense and August Smart Lock Gen 2 support Apple HomeKit via Bluetooth, so you can ask Siri to lock/unlock the door or check the lock’s status. The Apple HomeKit support allows for out-of-Bluetooth-range control of your smart lock. Just make sure your Apple Hub (Apple TV or iPad) is plugged in and within the lock’s Bluetooth range. You can issue access and get instant notifications whenever the lock is used — control of your front door is always at your fingertips.

The Schlage Sense and August smart lock offer keyless experience. No need to worry about lost or copied keys. Ever. Plus, with a smart lock like the Schlage Sense or the August Smart Lock Gen 2, you’ll never miss a visitor. Check when they come and go right from the smart lock’s app.

Schlage Sense vs. August Smart Lock Gen 2 — Differences

  • Difference #1: Remote Control – Both locks offer remote control via HomeKit. However, there are other options for remote control available, though at additional cost.

You can control the Schlage Sense remotely via the Schlage Sense Wi-Fi Adapter. The adapter pairs the Schlage Sense lock with your home’s Wifi network to provide seamless remote control of your smart lock. No wiring is required, just plug in the adapter and proceed setting everything up via the Schlage app.

The August Smart Lock Gen 2 offers remote control either via the August Connect or the August Doorbell Cam Pro. The August Connect is very similar to the Schlage Sense Wi-Fi Adapter, it serves the same purpose. However, it’s not the only option for remote control.

The August Doorbell Cam Pro is a 2-in-1 device: it combines a “gateway” for the August smart lock and a smart video doorbell. It’s a great alternative to a simple gateway, since it actually has more value behind it than just serving as a connector. Get two birds stoned at once!

To sum it up, the August Smart Lock Gen 2 offers more remote control options than the Schlage Sense. Though both come at an additional cost.

  • Difference #2: Auto Lock/Unlock – The August Smart Lock Gen 2 features an Auto Unlock feature which unlocks the door when you approach so that you don’t need to reach for your phone. The lock uses a combination of geo-location and the proximity of your smartphone to measure the distance and help prevent accidental unlocks.

And with the Auto-Lock feature, the August Smart Lock Gen 2 will automatically lock a door behind you within anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes. No need to worry if your front door is unlocked, the August lock will take care of it for you. Though, heads-up for being accidentally locked out without a phone or a key. If that happens, you can log into the app from another device and unlock your door. Also, you can always disable the feature from the August app beforehand.

The Schlage Sense doesn’t have an Auto-Lock/Unlock feature. You’ll need to enter a PIN code or use an app to unlock the door, and press the “Lock” button on a keypad to lock the door behind you. Though, even if you forgot to lock the door, you can check the lock’s status and lock the door remotely (assuming you use an Apple hub or Schlage Sense Adapter for remote control).

  • Difference #3: Installation – The Schlage Sense replaces your whole standard lock, both the interior and exterior parts. The new deadbolt is very secure since it’s rated Grade 1 (the highest) by ANSI. It’s one of the best locks that you can get when it comes to residential safety and security. Though, the installation process might be a little bit tricky: make sure you align the deadbolt with the latch perfectly, otherwise it might cause battery drainage or general malfunction. But, you can always avoid it by ordering a Deadbolt Installation Service on Amazon for a fast and simple setup.

The August Smart Lock Gen 2 replaces just the interior part of your existing standard lock, so you get to keep the lock and keys. Plus, since the exterior part remains the same, you’ll avoid the unwanted attention that might come with a new smart lock.

Since you only need to replace the interior part of your standard lock, the installation process, as well as the setup, takes just a few minutes.

  • Difference #4: Built-in Alarm – How do you make secure Schlage smart locks even more secure? With a built-in alarm — the Schlage Sense features sensors that feel vibrations on the door to warn everyone with a 90 Db alarm. You can also test the alarm by entering four incorrect PIN codes consecutively.

The August Smart Lock Gen 2 doesn’t have a built-in alarm.

  • Difference #5: Keypad – The Schlage Sense comes with a backlit keypad on the exterior part of the lock. So you can easily share access with friends, family, and any other guests by issuing them PIN codes. The keypad features a fingerprint-resistant finish (which is a +1 to security).

The August Smart Locks Gen 2 doesn’t come with a keypad, though you can buy it separately — the August Smart Keypad. The reason it’s sold separately is probably because the August Smart Lock doesn’t have an exterior part to begin with. Plus, having the keypad separate offers additional flexibility — you can place it anywhere you want on or near the door.

  • Difference #6: Shared Access – The Schlage Sense has a 30-code memory capacity. You can issue all-time or scheduled access for your home to anyone you want. Plus, you can also issue virtual keys. Check out more information about them here.

The August Smart Lock has no limits when it comes to sharing access with others. Just send an invitation and you’re all set. You can choose between four different access types to grant: Always, Recurring, Temporary, and Notifications. Check out the difference between the four on this August Support Thread.

And there’s also the August Doorbell Cam Pro, which allows you to see who is at your door even when you’re not at home. Plus, you can use it as a bridge for your August Smart Lock remote control.
