Schlage Connect vs. August Smart Lock Pro

There are a few major differences between the Schlage Connect vs. August Smart Lock Pro. And one difference is that only one of these two locks uses both HomeKit and Z-Wave to help provide seamless integration into your smart home setup. So let’s take a closer look at the Schlage Connect and August Smart Lock Pro to help you decide which is the better fit for your home.

About Schlage and August Locks

Schlage and August are known to be both reliable and secure. And even though they already have a fantastic line of smart home locks, they’re always looking to improve.

In 2017, August introduced their Gen 3 locks: the August Smart Lock (simple, budget-friendly lock) and August Smart Lock Pro (everything you can think of and even more). The new Gen 3 locks are a perfect addition to August Gen 2 lock (HomeKit-enabled). Check out our comparison August Smart Lock vs. Pro vs. Gen 2 to learn more about August locks.

Schlage has been in the market for over a century. This company has a great range of both standard and smart locks to offer. Schlage locks feature different finishes and designs that will match any home decor. Besides the Schlage Connect, there are two more Schlage locks that really deserve to be mentioned: the Schlage Sense (HomeKit-enabled) and Schlage Connected Keypad (a simpler version of the Schlage Connect). You can read more about them in our comparison Schlage Connect vs. Sense vs. Connected Keypad.

And before we get into the differences between the Schlage Connect vs. August Smart Lock Pro, let’s outline what the two locks have in common.

Schlage Connect vs. August Smart Lock Pro — Things in Common

Schlage sense vs connect

Both the Schlage Connect and August Smart Lock Pro give you total control over your front door at your fingertips. With both locks, you can forget about ever needing to use physical keys, meaning you’re saving yourself from looking for keys when leaving, fumbling for keys when coming back, or even just remembering to take them with you! Plus, lost or copied keys become a thing of the past.

With the Schlage Connect and August Smart Lock Pro, you can simply share access with your family, friends, or any other guests to your home. Whether it’s “Scheduled access” for a dog walker or handyman, or “All-time access” for your loved ones — you can set everything up right from your smartphone.

Also, you’ll never miss a visitor! Just check the lock’s activity history in an app to see who comes and goes. It’s that simple.

And now that we know what the two locks are capable of, let’s get to things that make the Schlage Connect and August Smart Lock Pro different and unique from one another.

Schlage Connect vs. August Smart Lock Pro — Differences

  • Difference #1: Technology – The Schlage Connect only uses Z-Wave technology to offer its smart features. Whereas, the August Smart Lock Pro utilizes Bluetooth, HomeKit, and Z-Wave Plus technology, which is an improved version of standard Z-Wave (check out our take on Z-Wave vs. Z-Wave Plus for more details).

The more technologies a smart lock utilizes, the more options it provides for smart control.

  • Difference #2: In-Home and Remote Control – The Schlage Sense turns into a smart lock only when it’s connected to a Z-Wave hub, like Wink or SmartThings. Otherwise, you use it as a standard lock with a keypad.

Once the Schlage Sense is paired with a Z-Wave hub, you can use a hub’s app to arm/disarm the lock, share access, and check the lock’s status and activity — no matter where you are, as long as you have an Internet connection on your smartphone. Make sure the Z-Wave hub stays plugged in for reliable and uninterrupted connection with the Schlage Connect smart lock.

The August Smart Lock Pro offers different in-home and remote control options. For in-home control, the August Smart Lock Pro uses Bluetooth to connect to your smartphone. Right after installation, you can control of the August Smart Lock Pro via the August app, though you’ll need to stay within the lock’s Bluetooth range.

For remote control, the August Smart Lock Pro can use the August Connect to pair with your home’s Wifi network. Or, you can pair the August lock with an Apple hub (Apple TV or iPad) or Z-Wave hub (Wink, SmartThings) to have total control over your smart lock from anywhere you are via Internet connection.

So, to sum it up, the August Smart Lock Pro is an out-of-the-box smart lock which offers more control options because it uses more technologies. Whereas, the Schlage Connect really only becomes smart when paired with a Z-Wave hub.

  • Difference #3: Auto Unlock – The August Smart Lock Pro’s Auto Unlock feature unlocks the front door for you when you approach it; no need to fumble for keys, pull out your smartphone, or enter PIN codes. The lock reads your phone’s geo-location and proximity to welcome you with an unlocked door while also preventing accidental unlocks.

With the Schlage Connect, you’ll need to either enter your unique PIN code or use a Z-Wave hub’s app to unlock the door.

  • Difference #4: Installation – The Schlage Connect replaces both the interior and exterior parts of your standard lock. So, you might want to order the Deadbolt Installation Service on Amazon to make sure the installation is done correctly, as a faulty installation might cause the lock to malfunction.

The August Smart Lock Pro replaces just the interior part of your standard lock, so you get to keep the exterior part and the keys. Plus, you’ll avoid the unwanted attention keeping the exterior part the same. The whole installation and setup is pretty simple and takes only a few minutes.

  • Difference #5: Security – The Schlage Connect is arguably one of the most secure locks on the market. It’s a Grade 1 (the highest rating for residential security) lock with a built-in alarm. The alarm protects from forced damage and brute force attempts. The lock has sensors to scan for vibrations on the door and lock, so if someone decides to kick the door/lock, an alarm will go off. And the same happens when 4 incorrect PIN codes are entered.

The August Smart Lock Pro doesn’t come with an exterior part to begin with, so the security of your front door mostly depends on your existing deadbolt.

  • Difference #6: DoorSense™ Technology – One of the biggest security issues with smart locks is that while the lock status says “Locked”, the door might be ajar. This happens when the door is left open and the smart lock is engaged. Typically, smart locks only report the lock’s status, and not the door’s. Until recently, it has been one of the number one concerns. But, everything’s changed with the launch of DoorSense Technology.

DoorSense Technology lets you know if your door is open or closed. It uses magnetic fields to determine the state of your door. And in case a door is left open for certain period of time, you’ll get an alert to notify you of it.

The August Smart Lock Pro is one of the few locks that offers the DoorSense technology to keep your home safe and secure. The other lock which features DoorSense technology is the August Smart Lock (Gen 3).

The Schlage Connect doesn’t have this feature, so you’ll just need to pay extra attention to closing the door every time you come and go.

  • Difference #7: Shared Access – With the Schlage Connect you can create and share up to 30 unique PIN codes with your family, friends, or services. Whereas the August Smart Lock Pro offers unlimited access sharing — you can issue as many invitations as you want.
